Don’t Forget the Label! Attention to Detail in HTML/CSS

Attention to detail is paramount in design. Sometimes it’s the little things which can make or break a design or engage a user just that little bit more. My favourite example of this at the moment is the footer in the new Tapbots site.

Notice the very subtle highlight of the grey and the text on the “read the blog” link when you mouseover? That’s attention to detail.

The thing with the label tag is perhaps not so creative, but more of a necessity. You should take the time to make labels for your inputs/textareas/selects etc because it adds to the usability of the page and validates.

Not only should you take the time to make your label tags, but you should take the time to style them.

That’s right, style them. The default styling, in the majority of browsers, on a label tag is simply the same as the text. This would be fine, except a label isn’t just text. It’s interactive. Have you ever noticed when clicking on the text next to a checkbox it checks or unchecks the box? Assuming all elements have labels assigned to them, you can click on any label in any form and have it move the focus to that element. This is exceptionally useful for things such as checkboxes and radio buttons which can be quite small. You’re increasing the clickable area around the element and therefore increasing usability.

I would wager a lot of people don’t know about this trick, I’d say some figure it out by chance like I did, and the reason? By default the cursor style does not change over a label.

I very quickly learnt to add the following to the CSS reset I use on all my sites:

label{
cursor:pointer;
}

You can find out more about CSS resets here.

Voila! Your cursor should turn into a hand when hovering over the label, and when clicked it will place the focus in the associated element.

I usually go a bit further and give the label some colour, or weight, make it fit with the rest of the design.

It’s a good idea to put the cursor:pointer style on the button tag too, just to provide the added visual reinforcement that it is a button and to keep behaviours on the web and computers consistent.

So, add that snippet to your CSS reset, and consider how you can creatively enhance your form with more styles now that you have the label tag to play with!

Happy New Year

I hope you’ve all had a very lovely holiday time. Ours was the usual, eat too much, drink too much and feel bad afterwards. I got given rather a lot of chocolate this time round, more than ever, quite a lot of it has disappeared now into the bottomless pit that is my stomach… I got some really lovely gifts, including all of Friends, Bones season 2, a Postsecret book, some Snoopy stuff, PW’s cookbook, money for a bike helmet, new crockery & hand towels for the bathroom (I must be an adult, I was really excited about this), and a bunch of other really cool stuff.

It was also our first Christmas at our flat instead of a parents’. Lunch was good and not as much hard work as I thought, but that may be to do with not cooking a whole turkey… I also managed to watch every single Wallace and Gromit short & film over the festive period.

For our Xmassy pics complete with snow, Snoopy, Playmobil advent calendars, check them out on Facebook here.

There’s a slew of 2009 review & 2010 promises in my Google Reader today, but what’s one more eh?

Art, Design & Photography Inspiration

jazdesign_tumblr

I love inspirational images. Love. I read a lot of blogs and galleries every morning (slowly being documented here!) and figured I needed a place to put all of my favourite images that I find. If you’re interested in a bit of daily inspiration, but not an overwhelming amount, check out my tumblr! I am using a default theme, time is short right now.

I’ve also added a tumblr widget on the right here, and a flickr one (when I redevelop my site I’ll find a better one!)

ETA: I’ve actually stopped using tumblr. The servers are constantly down, and it’s a lot of effort to add things to it. I’ve started using vi.sualize.us because it offers a similar functionality to Delicious, but for saving and sharing images! View my visualized here!

As for the tumblr widget, I’m using it to display my flickr photos for now because I couldn’t find a flickr widget I liked :D

Link Love: Design & Web Blogs You Should Read

Something I didn’t learn whilst at university was the importance of being a part of the design community. Reading and commenting on blogs, browsing galleries, doing tutorials – unfortunately for me I missed out on this, until I graduated. I don’t remember quite how I discovered the rich world of design online, I’m just happy I did. I advise anyone and everyone to read at least one thing a day, just one thing! Stay up to date with trends (and learn when to avoid them), share and learn about new techniques, find out how things are affecting the industry – the opportunities are endless. The galleries offer inspiration and opportunities to promote your work… I don’t think it can be denied that at least having a small amount of awareness of what’s going on is important.

These are a selection of the blogs that I have stored in my Google Reader that I check in on every day. I hope you find something you like after the jump!

The Post-Uni Book Binge

Everyone told me it would happen, and it did (as evidenced on the reviews page – most of those are after I finished all my work, or as I was finishing). I’ve been stuck on fiction for months, mostly the Kathy Reichs series. I’m now up to the latest book and awaiting a copy at the library of the one just released. I just cannot get through a design or photography book – much as I want to and know I need to to keep up my learning and development – I’m just in a book binge, and the books I’m reading aren’t even that great. They keep me interested, don’t get me wrong. I like Reichs’ books, but they’re not what I’d call masterpieces. I guess my brain just needed a break.

I have four (yes, four! Two of which belong at work) half finished design and photography books which I simply must finish! I’m thinking that the new rule is no more fiction until I’ve finished those, but I just know I’ll crack… hrm.

So two questions, what was your post-uni book binge like? And any recommendations for fiction for me to read now I’m up to date with Reichs?

Up my sleeve…

So much! So many ideas, plans, thoughts, things to do! The site needs a ginormous update. Some freelance work I’m doing will mean I’ll finally finish my content management system I was developing for my portfolio meaning that should finally appear in it’s full glory (bells, whistles, the works!)

I’ve also been investigating some good photo gallery software, since that’s something I really don’t have time to build from scratch. I want to keep my full photography portfolio on here, and hopefully link through to a print service. I’m thinking of going with Coppermine for now, gallery2’s back end didn’t seem particularly user friendly to me… but I’m still not completely happy with what coppermine offers, so any other suggstions are welcome.

I’m working on some freelance projects, one for the 3rd Guildford Guides, another for The Sporum (Spore and the Sims 2 forum) which involves fully reskinning an smf forum.

Work work is busy as usual. Lots of sites went live recently so I’ll have to update on that soon.

I went to the University of the Creative Arts on Saturday for an open day, to see about postgrad courses. I won’t be able to do a masters for a few years (gotta save up etc) so I’ve a few things in mind until then ;)

My Degree Show

100 Years Degree ShowFor anyone interested (and in the area) Friday is the beginning of mine and the Mister’s degree show at the University of Portsmouth. We will be exhibiting work we’ve done on our course and will be available to chat to. The rest of the school is exhibiting too and from what I’ve seen going up, there’s going to be some really interesting work to experience!

For more information please visit this link.

The Mister is also looking for a web or Flash designer/developer job in the Woking, Surrey area. You can view his portfolio here.

I’m still PHPing mine up with my custom built cms and whatnot :)

Review: Designers are wankers

Designers are wankersI read this one in full and it was pretty interesting stuff. Like ‘How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul’ it has lots of tips and things you can expect entering the design world. It has case studies and interviews and McCormack has some good life experience to share. Well worth picking up – I even considered buying it, but I’m terribly broke at the moment. ;)

Two for one review: the art of promotion and Becoming a Graphic Designer

the art of promotion

I won’t say I read these books in full, more like skimmed them and pulled out the relevant and interesting information and interviews that I needed.

the art of promotion is very interesting – I like looking at other people’s work and the primary goal of this book seems to be to show you work and deconstruct it. It’s an inspiration source really and I found some innovative things which will work very well to inform my development of my self promotion. The accompanying text is both informative and interesting too.

Becoming a Graphic Designer
Becoming a Graphic Designer (2nd ed)

Again, skimmed and pulled out relevant info. I’m a web designer so there was quite a lot of irrelevant stuff that I’m sure is really interesting for people in those different fields. The web design section had some interesting interviews and while I think this version is a bit dated, it was still worth the read skim through.

Both of these were on the reading list for my self promotion unit and they are both useful if you’re going into the graphic design/web design field. Probably more so for graphic/communication design.
